There you go. Relying on anyone or anything is a sucker bet. You'll lose every time. Rely on yourself and the job gets done.

In theory. But let's be honest: sometimes people just would rather not think for themselves.

This is true. Of course, those people tend to weed themselves out.

[Not entirely true, given the sheer number of fools he's forced to interact with on a daily basis, but he likes to think so.]

On occasion, but they do multiply. Ironically enough, they seem to be the ones who ask for help the most, and those who actually need it the most ask hardly at all.

That's where being a selfish ass who only cares about himself comes in handy! Living obligation free is the only way to live.

Ha! Probably. I have a crazy theory that helping others keeps us marginally humble. So I at least try to do that once in awhile.

Rest of the bastards can piss off.

Humble is for people who aren't gorgeous so you might as well not bother. They never appreciate the help anyway.

Maybe you just know better people than I do? Or, maybe I should say, more forgiving? [shrugs]

You find you get a lot out of helping people?

I make an honest attempt to surround myself with decent folks. Doesn't always work, but I've been reasonably fortunate.

And you know, I've never really thought about it. Sometimes it's just a matter of doing the right thing and not really expecting anything in return.
